Sci-fi adventure meets love story—and East meets West—in Mangaman, an original graphic novel for teens.

Ryoko, a manga character from a manga world, falls through the Rip into the “real” world and tries to survive as the ultimate outsider at a typical American high school.

Barry Lyga writes a metafictive masterpiece as manga meets traditional Western comic book style, while Colleen Doran combines manga techniques and conventions with Western comic book storytelling to create a unique seamless—though not Ripless—comic hybrid that is by turns hilarious and heartbreaking.

The new graphic novel written by best selling Young Adult author Barry Lyga, creator of The Adventures of Fanboy and Gothgirl, Archvillain, Boy Toy, and Goth Girl Rising, and Colleen Doran (you’re at her website,) is a “A metafictive masterpiece in which manga meets traditional Western comic book style, with artist Colleen Doran combining manga techniques and conventions with Western comic book storytelling to create a unique, seamless — though not Ripless — graphic novel hybrid that is by turns hilarious and heartbreaking.”

This book is completed and in house at publisher Houghton Mifflin and will be for sale in November! I’m so excited, I dance and squee! That’s hard to do while you type!

Sci-fi adventure meets love story—and East meets West—in Mangaman, an original graphic novel for teens.
Ryoko, a manga character from a manga world, falls through the Rip into the “real” world—the western world—and tries to survive as the ultimate outsider at a typical American high school.

When Ryoko falls in love with Marissa Montaigne, the most beautiful girl in the school, his eyes turn to hearts and comic tension tightens as his way of being drawn and expressing himself clashes with this different Western world in which he is stuck in. “Panel-holed” for being different, Ryoko has to figure out how to get back to his manga world, back through the Rip . . . all while he has hearts for eyes for a girl from the wrong kind of comic book.

I hope you like this art enough to buy a t-shirt. Because I have donated all proceeds from the sale of this image to THEONERING.NET’s efforts to raise money to help the people of Christchurch, New Zealand. Get t-shirts, prints, posters, cards, and even an iPad case. Which I want.

This color art has never been available before, and I will never make this image available for sale anywhere else.

For more information about the Christchurch earthquake, go HERE.

The shallow 6.3 magnitude quake centred at the port town of Lyttelton struck at 12.51pm last Tuesday, killing at least 154 people, with police expecting the final toll to reach “around 240″.

BTW, you can CUSTOMIZE the way you want the art to appear on the product, such as moving the image about, making it larger or smaller, and adding text. If you don’t like white borders on your postcard, or greeting card, just move the image about, and they are gone.

For example, the iPad case shown has a wide border around the image.

I designed mine to fill the entire item:

The direct link to the ZAZZLE shop is here.
Please consider buying at least one postcard or other item for the benefit of the people of Christchurch. Thank you.

It’s been out for years now, but my how-to-draw book Girl to Grrrl Manga continues to please. I just found out my publisher sold foreign rights! It’s amazing this little book has done so well. I got such a nice response to it when it came out.

It’s available in all major book stores, here at my personal book shop, and also available in many art supply stores. So funny to go into a store to buy paper, and there’s my book! The sequel Manga Pro Superstar is also still available.

My new graphic novel for Houghton Mifflin is drawn in two different art styles (and you’ll understand why that is when you see the book). Girl to Grrrl Manga shows you to do this, too.

I’m not exactly sure when Houghton Mifflin is going to let us announce the title of the book, but I will jump up and down and make gleeful noises as soon as I can say more.

While I don’t post on this portfolio blog often, I post at least three times a week at A Distant Soil.com, and also at my Facebook Fan Page. So, I hope you’ll sign up to stay on top of all the info!

Thanks.

Barry Lyga is the writer of the upcoming graphic novel I illustrated for Houghton Mifflin. Sorry, I can’t tell you the title! It’s all top secret.

It won’t be out for months and months, but I have in my hot little hands the galley the publisher sent for pre-publication approval. It is so exciting to have a new graphic novel coming out! I have been working on several graphic novels for years and they will all be finished within a twelve month period. So after flying below the radar since 2007, it will look as if I did a ton of work overnight when all this comes out.

Here is the info about Barry’s appearance at the Teen Author Festival.

I am within about 3-4 months of finishing off two other graphic novels, and I just signed a contract for a third with Dark Horse Comics. The book is an adaptation of a short story by a New York Times bestselling novelist. Once again, I can’t give you any details, except to say this will be the first fully painted GN I have done since 1991! Holy cow. My first was…um…uneven work, but I look forward to doing my best on this new project. I am very excited about it.

At the frustrating stage of near-completion on two GN’s, these coming weeks promise to be leg gnawing experiences. I will drink too much coffee and eat too much chocolate.
